An essential element of Gore´s product promise is to use chemicals responsibly and safely to protect workers in our supply chain, consumers and the environment.
To ensure the highest quality and safety of our products, we work with independent, credible third-party standards.
In 2010 all Gore Fabrics manufacturing sites have been certified to comply with bluesign® system, a highly demanding and comprehensive environmental and safety scheme for the textile industry. Since then, we have been working with our partners to promote and implement bluesign® system throughout the entire supply chain with the aim to provide “bluesign® approved Gore Fabrics” laminates to our brand partners. This means that throughout the supply chain we only use chemicals known to be safe and where their origin is traceable and trustworthy.
As a result, more than 65% of the Gore fabrics volume for garments is already certified as “bluesign® approved”, with Gore now targeting 85% of its consumer garments volume to be bluesign® approved by 2020.
ABOUT BLUESIGN® SYSTEM
The bluesign® system aims to replace or reduce all chemicals in the textiles value chain that represent a potential risk to people, animals or the environment. The bluesign® system sets high requirements of energy efficiency and use of resources, and demands the most modern production management and standards of safety at work. Only substances that are definitely (or ‘proven’) safe are permitted to be used in the manufacturing processes certified by bluesign®. bluesign® technologies carries out regular checks to ensure compliance with its strict quality standards.
OEKO-TEX® Standard 100
To give our consumers confidence in the safety of GORE-TEX and WINDSTOPPER® products, Gore Fabrics has been working with the OEKO-Tex® Standard 100 since 1996. Currently, almost 90% of consumer garment laminates are certified according to the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, with the rest manufactured in compliance with its requirements. By 2020, Gore Fabrics intends to have 100% of consumer garment laminates achieve OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification.
In January 2015 the Gore Fabrics Division was voted “Company of the Month” by OEKO-Tex® Standard 100 for its environmental programme and leadership role in using and applying Life Cycle Assessment.
ABOUT OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100
The OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is an independent test and third-party certification system for raw, intermediate and textile end products and is seen as the most frequently used product safety label worldwide.
Gore is a founding member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC). One of the key activities of the SAC is to develop, promote and use the Higg Index. Looking at finished products the Higg Index provides a credible, standardized source of information on the environmental and social impact of a finished product which could lead to a product labeling or an end-consumer information on the internet.
ABOUT THE HIGG INDEX
The Higg Index was developed by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition in a unique collaborative process among a diversity of stakeholders, including apparel and footwear brands, retailers, suppliers, chemical manufacturers, academics, government and non-governmental organizations, to better measure the comprehensive environmental and social impacts of apparel and footwear products.
Through use of the Index, companies can identify opportunities to reduce impacts and improve long-term sustainability throughout their supply chain. A transparent and open-source tool designed for comprehensive measurement of apparel and footwear products, the Higg Index focuses on measuring desired environmental and social outcomes in the following categories: water use and quality; energy and greenhouse gas; waste; chemicals and toxicity.
