GORE-TEX® products are durably waterproof and windproof combined with optimised breathability. They keep the wearer dry and comfortable in all kinds of work situations, operations and missions.
And they offer a lot more than just durable weather protection. GORE-TEX® products can be integrated with additional protective features making them ideal for a wide range of professional end-uses.
The GORE-TEX® membrane
The GORE-TEX® membrane is an extremely thin layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). It has over 1.4 billion microscopic pores per cm². It's these pores that give the GORE-TEX® fabric its special properties.
Wet fabrics rob your body of warmth. GORE-TEX® fabrics are durably waterproof, allowing you to stay dry and focus on the job in hand.
The meaning of waterproof
Waterproof products should remain waterproof for the lifetime of the garment, footwear or gloves. Durable waterproofness is what sets GORE-TEX® products apart. They must be able to withstand water-entry pressures encountered during severe weather and in demanding professional applications.
What makes a product waterproof is not just the fabric. All new GORE-TEX® product prototypes from our manufacturing partners are put through a battery of tests in our labs. Once they meet our strict weatherproof performance standards, they are sent to a Gore-certified factory for production.
The importance of waterproofness
Wet fabrics conduct heat three times faster than dry clothes, robbing your body of warmth. By keeping water out, our durably waterproof clothing system prevents this heat loss. As a result, you stay dry and comfortable, even during extended use, and in harsh conditions.
Windproof fabric preserves your microclimate and keeps you comfortable.
The meaning of windproof
Although textiles like microfibres, closely woven fabrics, and many fleece materials are often considered windproof, even light winds can penetrate most of these fabrics, making you feel chilled and uncomfortable. In technical terms, a fabric is only considered truly windproof if its air permeability is 5 l/m²/s (volume of air that can pass through one square metre of the fabric in one second) or less. All GORE-TEX® products meet or exceed this standard.
The importance of windproofness
As cold wind blows through your clothes, it causes convective heat loss, robbing you of the warmth kept in the thin layer of air between you and your clothing. GORE-TEX® fabrics prevent this windchill from happening by stopping the wind from passing through. The result – you preserve a comfortable microclimate inside your gear.
GORE-TEX® fabrics allow sweat to pass through and help reduce overheating and perspiration build-up.
The meaning of breathable
“Breathability” is one of the most misunderstood terms. It is not, as many believe, about a fabrics ability to let air move through it, rather it refers to how well it lets your sweat escape in the form of moisture vapour. Gore has high standards: During heavy exertion, our fabrics must breathe well enough to allow sweat to evaporate easily.
The importance of breathability
When you're active, your skin removes excess heat via perspiration. To avoid uncomfortable sweat build-up, the GORE-TEX® membrane allows the evaporating moisture to escape through the fabric. This breathability leads to more comfortable and drier skin, even during high exertion.
GORE-TEX® technical garments
GORE-TEX® technical garments will keep the wearer dry and comfortable in real working conditions. These garments are ideal for a wide range of professional end uses.
GORE-TEX® footwear for the workplace is durably waterproof and highly breathable. It keeps your feet dry and provides optimum climate comfort – in all weather conditions and over the entire lifetime of the product.
Warm, dry and protected hands make the toughest job that much easier to carry out.
