The summits blend one into the other, melding together in a flowing line, appearing like one huge idyllic backdrop. They cover approximately 655 square kilometres (253 square miles) between the Isar and Inn rivers, stretching northward to the lakes, Tegernsee and Schliersee: The Mangfall Mountains offer all sorts of fantastic tours all year long. 
At 1,722 meters (5,650 feet), Wallberg Peak sits enthroned with its classic trapezoid shape on the southern end of the Tegernsee lake. It is somehow my favourite mountain. It is indeed a well-known peak, not the least because it can be reached in an hour or less from Munich. Off we go on this sunny day from the bottom station in Rottach-Egern at 790 meters (2,592 feet). Our trek starts to the right of the car park on a wide forest path into the woods. I leave behind the mild rays of the sun and trade them for lively forested switchbacks. 
After barely a half-hour, there is a fork in the trail, and I take the somewhat longer, narrower "Winter Trail" toward Wallbergmoos. Like a huge wad of cotton, the fog floats across the Tegernsee lake's valley. Nevertheless, you are rewarded again and again with pretty views out over Tegernsee along the way. 
At about 1,400 meters (4,593 feet) and after another hour, I am getting very very close to my destination and therefore also my #GORETEX40 Moment. Coming out of the woods, I enter a wide saddle between Setzberg and Wallberg. I follow the signage, and a short time later I reach the summit surrounded on all sides by huge views. The wind roars around me from all directions, which doesn't bother me thanks to my GORE-TEX jacket. I fasten it tightly like a yellow-blue outdoor burka and notice nothing but the invigorating fresh air and the picturesque 360-degree view. Yeah! That is my #GORETEX40 Moment.
