He’s one of the big names in international sport climbing: GORE-TEX athlete David Lama. The son of an Austrian and a Nepalese mountain guide, he felt an incredible draw to the vertical as a young child. The climbing gym soon became his second home. The young David effortlessly won one climbing tournament after the other, perfected his technique and achieved fame beyond his country’s borders. Despite his love of indoor climbing, David wanted more; he was drawn to the “real” mountains. The hero of the halls set his sights on accomplishing something on those walls outside. His first daring attempt as alpine rookie was to free climb the so-called Compressor Route of the Cerro Torre, and he failed miserably. Three years later, David got another chance to scale the summit; this time with success. He writes about this experience:

I needed to learn to wait until I was really ready for the adventure I had signed myself up for.

But it was never about showing what he could do. By the age of 19, he had found an inner calm that defines his unique climbing style. He sees his performance as just one part of the whole, one part of the total experience. As a pioneer of a new climbing generation, he is constantly confronted with new trends and developments that often differ from his ideals and his concept of climbing. He shares his thoughts with us on his blog.
